Despite the fact that the soundtrack is easily the most excruciating part of an otherwise excellent film it was - strangely - the most celebrated aspect of the film winning both a Golden Globe and an Oscar. Peculiar world. A shame really as Tarzan is easily the most impressive Disney film to surface for years with visuals with out-awe the previous year's Mulan and downright exceptional voice-acting from the likes of Minnie Driver Nigel Hawthorne and Glenn Close. The original story has been streamlined somewhat (as you would expect) and there is a noticeable absence of local humans in the African jungles but the story remains oddly true to the spirit of the original stories. Tarzan himself is a bentbacked knuckle-scraping tree surfer complete with dread locks and a slightly spaced out expression. Jane on the other hand is another one of those smart heroines which Disney seems keen on - instant role model no doubt. The plot is as you would expect. Cute cartoon moppet is orphaned in the African jungles (his parents butchered tastefully off screen of course) he is raised by cute cartoon gorilla who has recently lost her own baby. Years later he comes back into contact with humanity and must decide where his loyalties lie. it's handled well buoyed along by a witty script and looks exceptional (the tree surfing scenes are absolutely astonishing) So music aside this is a decidedly superior Disney. ...
