WITHNAIL AND I - (DVD) Classic British comedy from Bruce Robinson. A pair of out of work actors in sixties London retire to the Lake District for a holiday. Unfortunately the house they are staying in belongs to Withnail's uncle and the reason they managed to secure it rent-free is a little unorthodox... Brilliantly funny and endlessly quotable. If there was ever a Brit-flick that didn't need an introduction Withnail and I is it. The Camberwell Carrot Uncle Monty "Scrubbers!" aerials burglary booze and the urine of a small child. Withnail & I has all this and more. Quietly philosophical curiously moving and flat out hilarious. Richard E. Grant has rarely been better as the wired Withnail. Soaked on spirits (any kinds you've got) and spouting insults like only a true pro could. Grant wide-eyed and scrawny is simply brilliant here it's impossible to imagine anyone else in the role. Paul McGann holds his own as the put-upon "I" more than simply a straight man he is the sympathetic centre of the film. He is - loosely - Robinson himself.
