(DVD) - (WS) Fairy tale horror from director Tim Burton. An ambitious policeman must confront a phantom headless-horseman to woo his true-love. Based on the story by Washington Irving Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci head a strong cast amidst stunning fog wreathed sets drenched in atmosphere and menace. The story in which a headless horseman terrorises the rural community of Sleepy Hollow by decapitating those who get in his way is handled with comic aplomb by director Burton delivering a gory and ghoulish slice of stylish horror. Paying homage to the films of Hammer horror through the fifties and sixties Tim Burton's lavishly produced Sleepy Hollow adds some well cured ham into big budget Hollywood horror. Not that this is a bad thing in fact for the most part the film is played straight faced despite having it's tongue quite firmly placed in it's cheek. Johnny Depp's Ichabod Crane is a man ahead of his time. Not only is he keen on practising (admittedly dubious) scientific methods to solve crime but he also has something of the nineties "new man" about him - ready to faint or cringe at the sight of the copious gore that floods the terrorised village of Sleepy Hollow. Depp's performance is amusingly mannered. Sporting a clipped English accent and restless darting eyes he makes an engaging unconventional hero with a taste for the histrionic. Christina Ricci is perhaps less successful as the object of his affections - the bewitching Katrina who doesn't really get a lot to do. The rest of the cast (including Miranda Richardson Michael Gambon and Jeffery Jones) are excellent clearly relishing the chance to overact somewhat. Based on Washington Irving's classic story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow the film is truer in its otherworldly atmosphere than its plot. Here Ichabod Crane is a policeman from out of town rather than a local school master what's more the headless one is not merely a hoax by Brom Crane's macho rival for the affections of Katrina but a genuine noggin-free phantom. This is no problem of course after all neither Dracula or Frankenstein have ever been faithfully filmed (not even the recent versions) and given that the original story concluded with the bullying Brom chasing the meek Crane out of town and claiming the girl for himself its quite nice to see the story re-written in the under-dog's favour. The most memorable aspect of the film however is the production design which is breathtaking throughout. Twisted trees crumbling buildings and skewed haystacks are all drenched in thick mist and muted colours the blood meanwhile (which flows readily) is bright red the same hue which graced the Hammer classics. The special effects are imaginative too - notably the decapitations (of which there are plenty) are spectacularly convincing. Tim Burton has always been associated with stunning images and surreal humour Sleepy Hollow is no different. A beautiful bloody and highly enjoyable tale. Treasured One The second brilliant book in a brand new fantasy series set in an entirely new world from bestselling authors David and Leigh Eddings. They are called the Dreamers. They look like sleeping children. They are in fact Gods. Despite the literally earth-shattering climax of The Elder Gods Dahlaine still does not regret having brought the Dreamers into the world of the Elder Gods. He only wishes he'd thought harder about the consequences. His sister Aracia fears the whole world will collapse in on itself if the Dreamers should all wake up and realize where they are. It's bad enough with them dreaming the future but at least it's a future. Dahlain is pretty sure he's safe from an 'I-told-you-so' from Aracia. The Dreamers give the Elder Gods a chance in the battle against the vicious Ruler of the Wasteland. Then spies of very short stature start cropping up in Veltan's bucolic and peaceful domain. They look like people or maybe they all look like the same person but they are more sinister than that. Fortunately Dahlaine is soon on the scene riding his thunderbolt. This second story of the sibling Gods is the story of the first god Dahlaine and his child Yaltar who is so dangerous ...
