Thirty-five years later their son Adam emerges into the nineties and falls in love with young Valley Girl Eve. But Adam and his parents have been living in a fifties time capsule and the new world seems very brave and big and strange indeed. With a plot that draws on everything from Rip Van Winkle to Atomic age science fiction Blast From The Past may not be particularly plausible but makes up for this with bucket loads of charm and wit. Naming your lovers Adam and Eve may appear horrendously self conscious and the reason that the film gets away with it is partly down the fact that the characters are so likeable. Played by Brendan Fraser and Alicia Silverstone you’re almost rooting for them from the outset. The casting is interesting elsewhere too. Adam’s parents are played by Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek (yes! Christopher Walken in a romantic comedy!) and both are excellent (and heavily made up – naturally). As Adam is sent out into the world armed with his mothers wish that he finds “a nice girl from Pasadena. One who doesn’t glow in the dark” his odyssey is a sort of reverse version of Pleasantville here the apparently sweet innocence of the fifties seems to infect those he meets. Its an intelligent satirical film blessed with some very funny lines. ...
